Atelier Esders, Paris

1920

The architect, Auguste Perret, argued that the skeleton of a building is functional just as animal's skeleton, "housing" very different organs. According to Perret, a proper building consists of a structural frame (ossature) and infillments. Ornament as decoration is not permitted, the function of ornament is taken over by the structural elements.
