That seems like an odd mix of images in the painting. Why combine an airship with orphans? I'm not sure what artist was trying to say.

It's very simple. More than this, it's typical for the time & place.
Orphans have no family, no background, no past.
Airship is Future.
Future is all they've got. Future doesn't belong to them yet, but is supposed to.

Quite right. All "human material" matter appears to be much darker than it seemed 70 or 80 years ago.
